Interesting CHALLENGE

The task was complex but exciting: a client wanted to build professional zero-latency Digital Audio Workstation for Android! They also wanted to build an API, so third-party sound applications can be plugged-in like in a professional desktop application!

Working with SAMSUNG

We were met with the Korean team in Samsung Poland’s R&D Center in Warsaw. It was a great experience to work with Samsung’s team of UI/UX designers, programmers and sound professionals who had worked on this application for several years.

THE CHALLENGE STARTED

We needed to beat any and all similar applications, including ImageLine’s FL Mobile designed by Artua previously, delivering a zero-latency DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to the Android platform. So we had to design something unique but recognizable.

KEYBOARD PIECES

We needed to follow the strict UI standards given by Samsung and we succeed in delivering three excellent keyboard designs.

We had to design three different themes

They must correspond to the sounds of three internal keyboard pieces found on Soundcamp.

REAL LOOKING DRUMS

Must be designed as a second task. Two sets of real-looking drums with great UI and UX must differ from all Drum apps that exist to date. We know the GarageBand's drums are a great example of UI and UX. But we created even better ones!

THE DRUMS RENDERINGS

Are created layer by layer, frame by frame with corresponding shadows and reflections sitting on each animated layer. We did this precisely by checking each detail to be as realistic as possible, then the guys from Samsung checked this from the performance side.

DRUMS ANIMATIONS

In our opinion, the shadows and reflections must be animated then you hit a drum, not just a buzzing snare when you hit it. As we have hardware performance limitations on mobile devices, we must come up with an efficient and great looking solution. We did it our way.

MIXER VIEW

The challenge was to be as close as possible to the real devices, but to have great UX and clickability on the slim smartphone screen. We worked a lot on prototyping and choosing the best possible layout for a controls-crowded screen.
The most controversial part was the Master track and Tracks Mode selection UX. The guys from Samsung have their strict view on that, but we succeed to make it our way.

LAUNCH SCREEN ICONS

We also designed a corresponding Launch screen and icons for the instruments we created. We put the same details in each illustration to make them shine.

Available at Galaxy
APP STORE

Now, the Soundcamp application is released into production and can be found in the Samsung App Store. We checked the application, noticed some mistakes in the layout, and reported them to Samsung to fix in the next Soundcamp release.

A NEW MUSIC PRODUCTION ERA

Starting a new music production era on Android devices. The first time the app was introduced, in an unusual way, was at Samsung Unpacked 2014 - the intro music was played and mixed LIVE on a Samsung Note4 with the help of SoundCamp!
